Council held a series of meeting in the
Pakistani capital and the city of Lahore on
Sept.1-2,2016.
During the 2-days visit,DEİK’sVardan
met with Pakistani President Mamnoon
Hussain, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif,
FinanceMinister IshaqDar and Pakistan’s
PunjabChiefMinisterShehbazSharif.The
Delegation also attended thePakistan-Tur-
key BusinessDialoguemeeting organized
in cooperationwith thePakistaniBoardof
Investment and Trade (PBIT) and DEİK/
Turkey-Pakistan Business Council in the
city ofLahore.AMemorandum ofUnder-
standing (MoU) was also signed between
parties to boost bilateral investment and
trade relations.
On the meeting with Pakistani Presi-
dentHussain on Sept. 2,DEİKDelegation
emphasized the importance of Turkish-
Pakistani relations.DEİK’sVardan thanked
toPresidentHussain for the country’s sup-
port following the failed coup attempt and
said:“Pakistanwasoneof the firstcountries
condemning the coup attempt and show
unity with the people in Turkey. Bilateral
ties and strategic partnership dating back
tomore than600years requires suchauni-
ty.Pakistanwasalso the firstcountry send-
ing a ParliamentaryDelegation toAnkara
after the attempt.Pakistan is an important
country toTurkey and ithasproved so.As
DEİK,wewant to increase the volume of
trade between our nations in the future.
For that,weneed tosetstrategic targetsand
increaseourbusiness cooperation.”
ONTHE POST-COUP
attempt pe-
riod,DEİKhas announced a self-ini-
tiated ‘mobilization’ on itswhole capacity.
AllDEİK’s bodies, including the Board of
Directors, theBoardofExecutives and133
BusinessCouncils operatingunderDEİK’s
umbrellahave started towork in full coor-
dination and cooperation toovercome any
possible challenges.
On July 22, allDEİK’s BusinessCoun-
cils have gathered for an urgent consulta-
tionmeeting withmore than 150 recom-
mendations produced by 120 Presidents
ofDEİK’s BusinessCouncils, in a 3-hours
long meeting. Those recommendations
have been consolidated, prioritized and
scheduled accordingly and been presented
toDEİK’sBoardofExecutives forapproval.
Following DEİK’s short-term Urgent Ac-
tion Plan has been published, comprising
11-steps tobe takenbyDEİK and itsBusi-
nessCouncils.
The Plan prioritizes flow of informa-
tion to counter misleading information.
A specialCommunicationCommittee has
been established in order to coordinate all
theworks undertaken byDEİK. The Plan
also includes regular contactswithTurkish
Ministries, especially on Economy, For-
eignAffairs and theEUAffairs.DEİK also
asked to all its BusinessCouncils to travel
to countries of responsibility and to tell
the truth behind the failed coup attempt.
“Business as usual” isDEİK’smotto to be
used during its contacts abroad.The insti-
tutionaims toholdcontactswithpublicau-
thorities, business circles, think-tanks and
mediaoutletson thosevisits.
Visits to foreignEmbassiesandConsul-
ates inAnkara and İstanbul are alsopartof
DEİK’sUrgentActionPlan.DEİKwillhold
regular contacts with foreign representa-
tives inTurkey in order to inform andup-
date them on developments following the
coupattempt inTurkey.DEİKalsoplans to
actively useDTİK,DEİK’sWorld Turkish
Business Council and will ask its repre-
sentatives to engage with public authori-
ties andbusiness representativeswhere the
Turkish diaspora is well-established. Last
butnot least,DEİKalsoplans tohold regu-
lar networking events all around Turkey
with the participation of foreign investors
and foreign business community based in
the country.
The 8th of Turkey Investment Con-
ference was held on Sept. 21, in New
York City in cooperation withDEİK,DEİK/
TAİKandCitibank.TurkishMinisterofEcon-
omyNihatZeybekci,TurkishMinister of En-
ergy and Natural Resources Berat Albayrak,
DEİK’sPresidentÖmerCihadVardan,DEİK/
TAİK’s President Ekim Alptekin and Serra
Akçaoğlu,CEO atCitibankTurkeyparticipat-
ed the Conference alongwithAmerican and
Turkishbusiness representatives.
In his opening remarks at the Confer-
ence, TurkishMinister of Economy Zeybekci
said: “Turkish economy isnow at such a stage
that it can be called amiracle after the coup
attempt”. Minister Zeybekci also mentioned
thatalthoughmassivesetbackswerepredicted,
the financial and banking system proved re-
silient on the first business day after the July
15 overthrow attempt. The Turkish economy
has reached an average annual growth rate of
above5percentsince the2008global financial,
saidMinisterZeybekci,and the country’sgov-
ernmentdebtratio tonational income isbetter
than25countriesof the28-EUMemberStates,
headded.
“Weareoneof thehighestamountofnatu-
ral gas consuming countries in theworldwith
more than 50billion cubicmeters a year” said
TurkishMinister of Energy and Natural Re-
sources Berat Albayrak at the Conference.
Minister Albayrak also highlighted that Tur-
key has to create some alternatives, like addi-
tionalpipelines.EnergyandNaturalResources
Minister also stressed toTurkey’s strategicpo-
sition in the regionwith itsneighborsholding
richoilandgas reserves.

Vardan said athisopening speech. “Wehave a
lot tooffer.Turkey isopen forbusinessandwill
support global growthwithpatience,”he add-

direct investment despite the 2008 financial

also emphasized that the Turkish economy
showed resilience against the 2008 financial
crisis.He also highlighted the extreme resil-
ience in the volatile environment as the result
ofgoodeconomicpolicies inTurkey.President
Alptekin called for more bilateral trade and
saidmore could be done to strengthen eco-
nomic timesbetween twonations.

lization’ following the coup attempt in

The visits are organized with the
framework of DEİK’s Urgent Action
Plan declared on July 26, 2016. The
main objective of theAction Plan is to
counter ongoing disinformation and
the intentional spreadof false and inac-
curate information on what happened
andwhat’shappening inTurkey.DEİK’s
specially established Communication
Committee coordinates theworks con-
ducted by DEİK’s Business Councils.
The Committee also set to organize
special visit to European capitals to
hold contactsmainly with counterpart
organizations, business representatives,
think-tanks, academia and localmedia
representatives.DEİKalsocontinueson
its working programme of 2016, plan-
ning ahead important programs that
will increaseTurkey’s investmentpoten-
tial and foreign tradeparticularly in the
US, Africa, Euroasia,Middle East and
Europe.

“THE TURKISH
business world has al-
ways been one of themost important sup-
porters of Turkey’s EU membership process,
especially during theCustomsUnion process in
1996andofficialstartof themembershipnegotia-
tions back in 2004.Last yearwehave left behind
10 years on accession talks and the process con-
tinues at a relatively slow pace and not reached
on a desired level. Turkish citizens and business
people are still not able to enjoy visa-free travel
to EUMember States and some issues awaiting
immediate solutions such as thepotentialupdate
onTurkey-EUCustomsUnion,Turkey’s integra-
tion to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment
Partnership (TTIP) talks,deepeningof economic
relationsand recently the refugee crisis”.
DEİK
through
its 37 Business Councils
stretched over Europe closelymonitors Turkey’s
relationswith theEUand the issues related to the
accession process from a business perspective.
DEİK’s PresidentVardan says, the EU is an im-
portanteconomicpartner toTurkeyasmore than
halfof its foreign trade isdonewith theEuropean
countries.
During a three-day long visit to the EU’s po-
litical enterBrussels on Sept. 26-28,DEİK’sDel-
egation contacted to 20 different persons and
institutions. The Delegation was led by DEİK
PresidentVardan, accompaniedbyDEİK’sCom-
municationCommitteeMembersEbruÖzdemir,
Murat Özyeğin, Özlem Gökçe, Hatice Karahan
and YASED’s Secretary General Özlem Özyiğit.
Theexchangeofviewshas focusedon the stateof
playof theTurkish economy after the failed coup
attempt, the political situation aswell as theway
forward.
DEİK’s Delegation hold meetings with se-
nior officials of the European Commission and
the European External Action Services (EEAS).
The groupmetwithMEPsKatiPiri,Parliament’s
TurkeyRapporteuronTurkey aswell asMarietje
Schaake. Two separate roundtable discussions
have been organized, one with Bruegel, one of
world’s leading economic think-tank; the other
at the European Parliament in cooperationwith
‘FriendsofTurkeyGroup in theEuropeanParlia-
ment’. The Delegation also came together with
DidierReynders,BelgianDeputyPrimeMinister
andMinister of Foreign Affairs, as well as with
representativesofBelgianbusiness circles.
