"POTENTIAL REVISION OF THE CU IS AN IMPORTANT WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP TURKEY-EU RELATIONS"

"Potential revision of the CU is an important window of opportunity to develop Turkey-EU relations"

On German Chancellor Merkel's statements with regards to Turkey-EU Customs Union revision DEİK's Vardan said: "On May 2015, the European Commission asked the Council the permission to negotiate Turkey-EU Customs Union revision negotiations. We as the Turkish business community wait for the permission to be granted to the Commission without any further delay. Any delay or problem on this process will have negative effects on the ongoing Turkey-EU relations already witnessing serious problems. Therefore the statements from the German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the Customs Union revision are disappointing. The EU and European institutions should not let and allow any Member State depreciate the process. We all know that the potential revision of the Customs Union is an important window of opportunity to develop Turkey-EU relations". Stressing on the fact that it has been more than 20 years since the Customs Union between Turkey and the EU is in effect, DEİK's Vardan said: "We already delayed on the Customs Union revision. So far Turkish Ministry of Economy has conducted an important and detailled work on the process. the EU part has also worked hard on this issue. Our goal needs to be the resume the process instead of depreciate it with statements".
