The DEİK/Türkiye-Iraq Business Council was established in 2001. After the 2nd Gulf War, the Iraqi government initiated a comprehensive reorganisation programme affecting in particular the sectors construction, infrastructure and energy. The Business Council played an important role in project promotion and was party to a number of international reconstruction efforts.
The Council is also engaged in finding solutions when companies invested in Iraq suffer as a result of economic problems, lack of security or political instability. In such cases, the Council is trying to mediate between Turkish and Iraqi authorities.
